Tutorial: Beanbags with Covers

I was super-psyched when I received an email from a Girl Scout Troop leader, inquiring about the Beanbags with removable covers that I had made for my nephew for his birthday. She was interested in making them as a project for her Troop to donate to shelters, and asked if I would be willing to send some instructions. So I took some photos and wrote up some instructions, and decided to make it into a tutorial to post here on the blog!

Pink Skulls! Carseat Cover

Finally got around to sewing up the carseat cover from the Make It Do blog tutorial. It turned out great and I couldn’t be happier! Now I just need to make a matching nursing cover and finish up the Amy Butler diaper bag (hopefully before she’s out of diapers! lol).

Pink Skulls Carseat Cover Carseat Cover Interior

I used Alexander Henry cotton prints for both sides; the one with pink and skulls (AWESOME) is “Regent Skulls” and I can’t remember the name of the other one, but I wanted something with bold monochromatic shapes for the interior and it was perfect. This took about six hours, working intermittently while Nola napped, and Gunner bounded around the house and kept himself occupied with “experiments”.

Good Noodle Success!

In other Gunner news, he filled his Good Noodle Jar, and got a LEGO tank!

He switched his “prize” several times over the course of the months: LEGO tank, Wolverine Claws, Spider-Man web shooter. He would have ended up with the Wolverine Claws, but they don’t sell them in stores anymore! He decided on the LEGO tank, and to celebrate his accomplishment we also went out to eat at Red Robin (our whole family, and it actually went smoothly)! Now we have reset the jar, and Gunner is already thinking of what he will get with his future points.

Gunner with his Good Noodle Jar (full) and his new LEGO tank!

I devised the Good Noodle system by combining a technique from Jo the “Supernanny” with something from an episode of SpongeBob Squarepants. Heeheehee! “Good Noodle Points” are craft pom-poms (two-hundred, to be exact) and the system utilizes both positive and negative reinforcement. The “Good Noodle Jar” is just a plastic lidded jar from Walmart, but it may as well be a treasure chest! Plus, it’s colorful and fun!

The “system” is really simple. He does something good, helpful, praiseworthy, chores, etc.–he gets points. If he does something “bad”, throws a fit, breaks the rules, doesn’t listen, etc.–points get taken away. When he fills the jar (and keeps his points for 1 week), he gets a prize! We’ve set the prize as a toy worth $50-$100 for which he would otherwise have to wait for Christmas or his birthday. It has worked wonderfully for us!

To get started, you put 10 points in the jar. Points are rewarded and taken away as necessary. This first time around, it took us about 5 or 6 months to fill the jar completely. We take a Ziploc bag of 10 points with us when we go shopping, and he gets to keep any points that are left in the bag when we get home. This helps to keep the whining and begging to a minimum without mom getting peeved and crabby. Woohoo!

Gunner Preschool Graduation

Gunner had his official Preschool Graduation on Monday. In the fall he will be going to Kindergarten (all day); I can hardly believe it! His sister was at the ceremony, being as proud as a baby can be for her big brother’s big day!

Whatever are we going to do this summer?! Gunner is signed up for swimming lessons, but those don’t start until the middle of June. I need to dig out the flyer for Vacation Bible School to check if it’s not too late to signup/go, and it won’t conflict with swimming lessons. Hopefully he can have some “playdates” (gah, I hate that word) with his friends so he doesn’t get too lonely. I would also like to make a trip to the zoo sometime. BUT WHAT ELSE?! We’re going to go crazy!

Microwave Brown Rice

I need to post this “recipe” for making brown rice in the microwave, in case I forget and can’t find it again. It comes out perfectly! I’ve tried making rice on the stove-top, in the crockpot, and one different microwave preparation, and they’ve all sucked! The stove-top method burns the rice and it all sticks to the pot, even with cooking spray! The crockpot method takes 4-6 hours and it also scorches the rice. The previous microwave method I used included too much water and the rice came out soggy and mushy. This microwave version is by far the best I’ve found and has made consistently great rice every time!

  • 1 cup brown rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 Tablespoon butter

Combine ingredients in 2-quart glass bowl (preferably with handle). Microwave on HIGH 5 minutes or until boiling. Stir. Continue microwaving on 50% power for 30 minutes. Fluff with fork.

Enjoy!

Oxiclean Vs. My Kids’ Stains

…and the winner is: OXICLEAN — at least 95% of the time. When my daughter was born, I tried switching to 20-Mule-Team Borax because it was about 1/3 the cost, but I soon found out it only cleaned stains out of clothes about 1/3 as well (if that). When I switched back, the Oxiclean also removed stains leftover from the failed Borax treatments that had been washed and dried several times.

As a demonstration of awesomeness, check out these before and after photos! Please forgive any lighting discrepancies; the before photos were taken at night with the kitchen lights, and the after photos were taken during the day with natural light. Warning: Explicit poopy messes forthcoming!

Before After

Before After

Before After

Now, to start with, I would like to explain that these are from the “Oxitreat” pile that I keep around for about 2 weeks. So some of these poops and stains have been dried and setting in for 10+ days. Also, the baby is breastfed, which may make the stains easier to remove. I’ve been using Oxiclean since my son was a baby (5 years ago!), and it has always worked great throughout his dietary changes. Breastfeeding, formula and solid foods, it all comes out somewhere and makes messes on the clothes. I’ve always been able to get the clothes clean, including during potty training and bedwetting (white sheets). All you need to do is put one scoop in the sink, fill it halfway with hot water, and soak items for an hour or two, agitating them a couple times.

Soaking in the Sink

Wash the clothes as usual after they’re done soaking. You’ll want to rinse them well after they’ve soaked before washing them, otherwise they get kind of a rough, crusty texture even after machine washing. Oxiclean also irritates my skin a little; makes it feel really dry and kind of itchy. You may want to wear gloves when using it, or rinse your hands wells (1-2 minutes under running water) and use a gentle hand lotion afterwards.

Oxiclean seems to work best on the “bodily” soils and stains. Food stains are tough, as you can see from the before and after comparisons of my son’s shirt.

Before After

My son is very active and we put up few boundaries as to how messy he can make himself (the house is another matter entirely), because of this he systematically destroys any clothing that he wears. This is fine, as we shop mostly at Goodwill and garage sales anyway, but every summer I buy him a couple packages of Hanes plain white tees. They’re nice because they keep him cool (he sweats buckets just like his mom) and at the end of the summer they can be “recycled” into whatever. But they don’t even last ONE DAY before he has them covered in any kind of stain you could imagine. Blood, grease, mud, grass, red kool-aid, he’s like a walking stain demonstration.

Oxiclean removes the bulk of the stains, and greatly minimizes they’re appearance. Remember, they’ve been sitting for probably a week before being treated, so that’s the best I can expect and it’s just fine with me. It extends the life of these white t-shirts and makes them look as presentable as a 5-year-old’s everyday white shirts can look. I’ve tried just washing without treating before and WOW–trainwreck.

Oxiclean Powder

One bucket of Oxiclean lasts us about 2-3 months. Along with treating the kids’ stains, I throw a scoop in the washer with my husband’s work clothes. I don’t use it for much else other than laundry. Thanks to Oxiclean, I’ve been able to resell or hand-down the majority of baby clothes and other fabric baby items (seat covers, sheets, blankets, etc.) once they’re outgrown. Without it, nobody would want the yucky stained used clothes; but with it, nobody is the wiser…

I wrote this review completely independently of any compensation in regards to this product. I believe when a product works well you should share your experiences and spread the word.

The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks

My husband brought back a special surprise for me from his trip to C2E2 2010 (comic book convention) in April. It turns out that Max Brooks was at the con for an appearance and book signing, so Bo figured I would like to have a signed copy of Brooks’ Zombie Survival Guide, even though we already owned it. When he got up to the table, however, he found something new and unexpected and awesome!

The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks (Max Brooks, Ibraim Roberson)

Recorded Attacks is a graphic novel offshoot from The Zombie Survival Guide, and it’s REALLY REALLY COOL! The stories pull you in; whether they are based even somewhat in reality or completely conjured up in Brooks’ overactive imagination, they seem easily believable… like rumors from the next town over that can never be verified.

The illustration artist is Ibraim Roberson, who’s style is absolutely fantastic! There is a very fine line to walk when illustrating zombie fiction, between too humorously cartoon-like and over-the-top gore-for-the-sake-of-gore (and shock value). Roberson’s style is perfectly balanced in this book; lifelike enough to be believable, while the grotesque horrors are precision-tuned to turn your stomach without completely overpowering the underlying ideas. Top notch stuff!

I would recommend this book for even the pickiest of zombie genre snobs! It’s also great for the weekend zombie enthusiast, your teenage sibling, conspiracy theorists, your undead grandma, or anyone who appreciates the relevance of zombies in the arts. Final grade: A (for Awesome)

Huh?! Survival of the Dead?!

Why did no one tell me that George A. Romero was making another movie?! By the looks of the trailer, it will be filled with fantastical zombie killing scenes, as I have come to expect from Romero’s zombie flicks. Have I not mentioned how awesome the zombie death scenes were in Diary of the Dead?! Made the whole movie, if you ask me. You can watch the official trailer for Survival of the Dead and see for yourself just a taste of what I’m talking about:

Survival Of The Dead - Official Trailer [HD]

Survival Of The Dead - Official Trailer [HD]

Some people say that the “of the Dead” series has become drawn out and cliche, but I say: “NEVERRRRR!” (and shake my fist in the air). Romero’s continuing saga never fails to entertain me. I mean, COME ON! The guy’s been doing this for OVER 40 YEARS! It’s no wonder he has devised some of the most original and creatively theatrical ways to kill zombies that I’ve ever come across in the various forms of zombie media.

This, along with the fact that I personally enjoy Romero’s directorial style, has me all excited for Survival of the Dead, and I will most certainly be purchasing the DVD (to add to the collection). I would also go to see it in the theaters, but I expect it will be limited release, which means it probably won’t be in any theaters around here… we’ll see what happens this Friday (May 28). Otherwise I may have to wait until August 24 for the DVD release!

If you’re interested, you could actually watch Survival of the Dead right now on Amazon’s V.O.D. service… but it’ll cost ya… $9.99 to be exact. I’m not sure if it will still be available once the film is released, or up until the DVD release, so get while the getting’s good!

‘Iron Man 2′ segment on NPR

This is a Burnt Weiners mirror entry:
http://www.burntweiners.com/2010/05/17/iron-man-2-segment-on-npr/

Neal Conan weinered-it-up on NPR’s Talk of the Nation today in a short, but somewhat in-depth, discussion with NPR’s resident comic book blogger, Glen Weldon on the topic of the recently released Iron Man 2 movie. I had no idea that one of my favorite talk radio hosts is a self-proclaimed comic book geek!

Listen to the 16 minute “podcast” on NPR’s website:
‘Iron Man 2′ Full Of Easter Eggs For Fans

When Neal quips, “I don’t read a lot of capes,” I literally laughed out loud. Another fantastic highlight is toward the end when one of the callers mentions that he now knows what was in the much sought-after briefcase in Pulp Fiction. Ha!

Etsy Finds: The Nursery

I was surfing through Etsy’s new Suggested Shops feature and was finding a lot of things that I really liked, mostly for Nola’s room. So I decided to put together a Treasury and try out the recently opened for beta testing Teasury East (here’s the temporary link to this treasury).

if only I had a nursery to decor–oh wait, I do!
now if only I had an unlimited budget…

Aw, man, there is just TOO MUCH fantastic stuff on Etsy! The new Suggested Shops app is really nifty, but I’m a bit suspicious of it right now, as it seems like there is an awfully high ratio of “suggested shops” that have been in Etsy’s The Storque blog for one reason or another. I’m not sure if it’s just a coincidence, because I do have a lot of items that I’ve found through The Storque that are in my favorites. Maybe they’re just working on cataloging shops? We’ll see how it develops, but I do really enjoy using it and it’s a great new feature!
