Happy (belated) 10th Anniversary, GrungeZombie.net!

The holidays were so busy that I totally forgot to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of GrungeZombie.net! Shame on me. It should have been November 6, 2012, as grungezombie.net was officially registered back in 2002 (you know, before every imaginable domain name was troll-bot-registered).

To make up for my tardiness, here’s a BLAST FROM THE PAST:

Gunner’s Birthday: It’sa Mario Time!

My little boy is 7-years-old!

To celebrate, we had planned a morning-to-night birthday Saturday — with family in the morning, friends in the afternoon, and a couple friends staying over night. BUT THEN: Ear infection sneak-attack the night before the party. Arg!

At the last second, had to push the friends/sleepover party back a week (with lots of phone calls at 10:30-at-night to attendees’ parents, *awkward*). Luckily we kept the “family” party as planned, so it wasn’t a total destructo-bummer for the birthday boy, who had been waiting in great anticipation of epic-birthday-party-day. Still had grammas, grampas, aunt & uncle, presents and decorations — and I forced the dozen family members there to eat the 4-dozen cupcakes I had prepared for the weekend. Who doesn’t love a birthday cupcake brunch?!

Occupy Wall Street (with dignity, please)

You know, I am 100% behind the whole Occupy Wall St. idea, and I’ve heard very intelligently-worded, thoughtful and moving speeches and interviews from some leaders and activists participating in this momentous political movement. Unfortunately, I’ve also seen some videos of “protesters” just being effed-up stupid. For example, inciting unrest and antagonizing the police (who are maybe hundreds, trying to control crowds of thousands), and then screaming “POLICE BRUTALITY” when they throw your ass on the ground and arrest you. Standing around shouting “WE ARE PEACEFUL!! WE ARE PEACEFUL!!” and then charging at a line of police officers, is NOT a “peaceful” protest. Not a very smart thing to do, ever. No sympathy.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m sure there are some shitty cops out there who would punch your grandmother in the face for no reason. But for the most part, they are average citizens (just like you) who are working long hours at a stressful job (just like you) for a paycheck to provide for their family (just like you) and would like to make it home at the end of the day without a trip to the hospital (just like you). The police are in fact there to protect you from yourself, protect other people from you, protect you from other people, and keep the situation from breaking out into a riot. Because when large groups of passionate, similarly-minded people congregate en mass, as peaceful as their intentions may be, mob-mentality will rule — and it only takes ONE black sheep to get the herd running off a cliff.

BY ALL MEANS, PLEASE KEEP POSTING VIDEOS showing that there are people in this country standing up for what they believe in, and not just believing what the government and corporations and the media are feeding them! Exercise your rights! (they’ve been getting a little flabby lately.) Stand strong for those of us who cannot or will not be there! But please, please, don’t go posting bullshit, inflammatory videos, that clearly show you being an ass, acting in a way that would get you arrested anyway, even if you weren’t part of a mob of protesters. It’s disrespectful, and diminishes the extremely important message that SOCIAL and POLITICAL CHANGE during this tumultuous time is necessary for America to recover from the malicious devastation that occurred in the financial sector.

Gunner’s New Room

One happy almost-5-year-old in his new room

Last year, we began remodeling the back room to move Gunner into that larger room. A long, long time ago, it was a roommate’s room, then when the new baby (namely Gunner) came along, it became the “junk room” because there was no way I was putting a baby in that room with the nightmarish electric-puke-chartreuse walls. But as Gunner grew and accumulated more and more stuff, he quickly outgrew the smaller “baby” room and really needed more space.

Dethklok and Mastodon

We went to the Dethklok/Mastodon show at the Val Air Ballroom in Des Moines last night (that’s right, on a Wednesday night) and it was well worth the mid-week trip and the $43 per ticket.

Wizard World 2009

Wizard World (Chicago Comic-Con) this year was not quite as exciting as last year. I was basically only there for one day (Saturday) and there really wasn’t much to do. Last year there was a simultaneous Horror convention which was more fun for me. I did snap a few pictures…

and his name is Hutch!

Say hello to the newest member of our family! He is a 6 week old Chocolate Lab, and his name is Hutch (as the post title suggests, lol). He came home Saturday afternoon, and things are going good so far. No accidents in the house yet, but a few hours of lost sleep taking him out in the “wee” hours of the morning. Festus is still pulling the grumpy-old-man routine so far, but hopefully he will get over it soon and play with the puppy. Daisy wants to play so bad but her stupid cone keeps getting in the way! Here are some photos, but I warn you, taking picture of this puppy turned out to be a lot harder than I had originally thought! Think of it as a montage: “20 Minutes in the Life of a Puppy.”

Nine Inch Nails Live!

Went to Nine Inch Nails concert last night. Pretty awesome. Trent was lookin’ HAWT! I’m a big fan of bulked-up/muscular Reznor, as opposed to the coked-out skinny/wiry Reznor of old. This show was not quite as awesome as the one we saw last year, but still a good show. But I TOOK MY CAMERA THIS TIME! So I have some cliché fan concert photos to share. My little brother (14 years old) came with us, and it was his first “general admission” concert! I took him into the fray of the floor and he got crushed and kicked and elbowed and loved it :) Ahh, bonding…

Wizard World, Flashback Weekend

Bo and I went to Chicago in July with some friends for the annual Wizard World convention, but then when we got there and checked in to our hotel, we discovered that the Flashback Weekend HORROR convention was happening in our hotel on the same weekend!! It was SO AWESOME!

This is what you see when you enter Wizard World
