Nola’s Room Makeover, Intro

Now that Nola is no longer a flailing newborn, she needs a proper baby girl’s room to grow into. I have plenty of plans swirling around in my head already, and most of them are simple and I already have most of the stuff I need. It’s just a matter of finding the time and getting it done!

Note the gaping white areas of blank wall space. Boring! My plans include alphabet wall cards, proper curtains, a small set of shelves (like in Gunner’s room), get that motorcycle out of there, switch out the breathable bumpers and mobile for the “new” ones acquired this weekend, and much more! I do like the extra storage under the crib, but I need to get a proper storage tub for the space there. I’ll be posting some “halfway there” pics once I get a few things done. ;)

FYI, here’s what Gunner thinks of the whole thing:

Mmm... root beer...

Changing Table Organizers

Munchkin Diaper Change Organizer (vs) Dex Products Ultimate Baby Organizer

Munchkin Diaper Change Organizer Dex Products Ultimate Baby Organizer

Munchkin Diaper Change Organizer 4/5 stars

If you want a soft-hanging organizer, this is the best you’ll get. It does tip forward a bit, as any hanging fabric organizer will, but it has compensated for that with pocketed shelves (as opposed to open shelves like on the Dex Products Ultimate Baby Organizer where everything slides right off). I use this Munchkin organizer with the Prince Lionheart Ultimate Wipes Warmer and it fits great right on top in a very convenient place. It fits everything I need in the organizer, whereas with the Dex Organizer I had to use an extra TV table tray to handle the overflow.

The pocketed diaper middle section is great! It actually holds the diapers in! It’s tricky to “restock” it, but the fact that the diapers do not tip out more than makes up for it! If you want something sturdier, you’ll have to go with hard plastic, because you won’t find a better fabric organizer.

Dex Products Ultimate Baby Organizer 1/5 stars

I purchased this to replace my Munchkin Diaper Change Organizer for use on my baby’s changing table because the Dex has better reviews, but boy was that a huge mistake! I will absolutely be switching back and posting a 4-star review on the Munchkin Diaper Change Organizer.

This Dex organizer has NO PLACE FOR WIPES! It shows a wipes container in the picture, but it must be some kind of freakishly tiny wipes holder, because the shelf that it’s sitting on is only about 4-inches deep. I use a wipes-warmer, and there’s absolutely no way it fits on this (the Munchkin Organizer had plenty of space for it).

I fit everything I need on the Munchkin Diaper Change Organizer, but after switching, I had to use a TV tray table to hold the overflow items that the Dex organizer cannot accommodate: wipes, wipes warmer, baby power, vaseline, diaper pail refills. Oh, and the diapers fall out of this one A LOT because it slants forwards. I can’t even use the two top shelves of it because if my baby kicks or moves and it shakes the changing table, whatever is there falls right off.

I may keep this to hold clothing, burp cloths, sheets, and maybe shoes or socks in the little netted pockets, but there’s no way it will work for organizing diaper-changing supplies. If you want some extra hanging storage, this may be for you, but DON’T count on it as a changing-table caddy.

Pink Skulls! Carseat Cover

Finally got around to sewing up the carseat cover from the Make It Do blog tutorial. It turned out great and I couldn’t be happier! Now I just need to make a matching nursing cover and finish up the Amy Butler diaper bag (hopefully before she’s out of diapers! lol).

Pink Skulls Carseat Cover Carseat Cover Interior

I used Alexander Henry cotton prints for both sides; the one with pink and skulls (AWESOME) is “Regent Skulls” and I can’t remember the name of the other one, but I wanted something with bold monochromatic shapes for the interior and it was perfect. This took about six hours, working intermittently while Nola napped, and Gunner bounded around the house and kept himself occupied with “experiments”.

Oxiclean Vs. My Kids’ Stains

…and the winner is: OXICLEAN — at least 95% of the time. When my daughter was born, I tried switching to 20-Mule-Team Borax because it was about 1/3 the cost, but I soon found out it only cleaned stains out of clothes about 1/3 as well (if that). When I switched back, the Oxiclean also removed stains leftover from the failed Borax treatments that had been washed and dried several times.

As a demonstration of awesomeness, check out these before and after photos! Please forgive any lighting discrepancies; the before photos were taken at night with the kitchen lights, and the after photos were taken during the day with natural light. Warning: Explicit poopy messes forthcoming!

Before After

Before After

Before After

Now, to start with, I would like to explain that these are from the “Oxitreat” pile that I keep around for about 2 weeks. So some of these poops and stains have been dried and setting in for 10+ days. Also, the baby is breastfed, which may make the stains easier to remove. I’ve been using Oxiclean since my son was a baby (5 years ago!), and it has always worked great throughout his dietary changes. Breastfeeding, formula and solid foods, it all comes out somewhere and makes messes on the clothes. I’ve always been able to get the clothes clean, including during potty training and bedwetting (white sheets). All you need to do is put one scoop in the sink, fill it halfway with hot water, and soak items for an hour or two, agitating them a couple times.

Soaking in the Sink

Wash the clothes as usual after they’re done soaking. You’ll want to rinse them well after they’ve soaked before washing them, otherwise they get kind of a rough, crusty texture even after machine washing. Oxiclean also irritates my skin a little; makes it feel really dry and kind of itchy. You may want to wear gloves when using it, or rinse your hands wells (1-2 minutes under running water) and use a gentle hand lotion afterwards.

Oxiclean seems to work best on the “bodily” soils and stains. Food stains are tough, as you can see from the before and after comparisons of my son’s shirt.

Before After

My son is very active and we put up few boundaries as to how messy he can make himself (the house is another matter entirely), because of this he systematically destroys any clothing that he wears. This is fine, as we shop mostly at Goodwill and garage sales anyway, but every summer I buy him a couple packages of Hanes plain white tees. They’re nice because they keep him cool (he sweats buckets just like his mom) and at the end of the summer they can be “recycled” into whatever. But they don’t even last ONE DAY before he has them covered in any kind of stain you could imagine. Blood, grease, mud, grass, red kool-aid, he’s like a walking stain demonstration.

Oxiclean removes the bulk of the stains, and greatly minimizes they’re appearance. Remember, they’ve been sitting for probably a week before being treated, so that’s the best I can expect and it’s just fine with me. It extends the life of these white t-shirts and makes them look as presentable as a 5-year-old’s everyday white shirts can look. I’ve tried just washing without treating before and WOW–trainwreck.

Oxiclean Powder

One bucket of Oxiclean lasts us about 2-3 months. Along with treating the kids’ stains, I throw a scoop in the washer with my husband’s work clothes. I don’t use it for much else other than laundry. Thanks to Oxiclean, I’ve been able to resell or hand-down the majority of baby clothes and other fabric baby items (seat covers, sheets, blankets, etc.) once they’re outgrown. Without it, nobody would want the yucky stained used clothes; but with it, nobody is the wiser…

I wrote this review completely independently of any compensation in regards to this product. I believe when a product works well you should share your experiences and spread the word.

Etsy Finds: The Nursery

I was surfing through Etsy’s new Suggested Shops feature and was finding a lot of things that I really liked, mostly for Nola’s room. So I decided to put together a Treasury and try out the recently opened for beta testing Teasury East (here’s the temporary link to this treasury).

if only I had a nursery to decor–oh wait, I do!
now if only I had an unlimited budget…

Aw, man, there is just TOO MUCH fantastic stuff on Etsy! The new Suggested Shops app is really nifty, but I’m a bit suspicious of it right now, as it seems like there is an awfully high ratio of “suggested shops” that have been in Etsy’s The Storque blog for one reason or another. I’m not sure if it’s just a coincidence, because I do have a lot of items that I’ve found through The Storque that are in my favorites. Maybe they’re just working on cataloging shops? We’ll see how it develops, but I do really enjoy using it and it’s a great new feature!

Baby Block #1 Complete

Thanks to my “subscription” to the Craftzine Blog, I was pointed to this cute Plastic Canvas Baby Blocks idea from Roots and Wings Co. — and here is the result!

Plastic Canvas Baby Block #1

The sides are a little flimsy, as I apparently purchased 7-count plastic canvas instead of 10-count, so the squares were larger and the plastic thinner. It also took about 3-times longer to stitch than if I’d gotten the proper size, because I had to fill in all the negative space!

Plastic Canvas Baby Block #1

I’ll eventually get the proper 10-count and make a few more to finish out the set. But to use up the remaining 7-count with the next block, I think I’ll try using ribbon or just stitching on some fabric like they show in this tutorial. Plus, this will give some great textures for little Nola’s hands!

A trip to the Carter’s outlet

I mentioned Carter’s bodysuits in my last post, and after a trip to the Carter’s outlet store, I must say that I am quickly falling in love with the brand overall. It started when I found the perfect dress for Nola’s 3-month baby pictures, but Toys R’ Us didn’t have her size! So I snapped a picture of it with my camera and jumped on the Carter’s website when I got home. If I was going to order it online, it would cost $21+ with shipping. So instead, today we made a short trek to the physical store at the Tanger Outlet Center, armed with a 25% off coupon.

I’m glad we went, because they were having a good sale (of course) and with the coupon I ended up getting about $100 worth of merchandise for $40, including the dress! Immediately after walking in the door to the store, I found the cutest little layette with snails, which pretty much sealed the deal in my mind of Carter’s being my new favorite clothing for the baby.

Gerber Onesies don’t fit.

You’ve all been thinking it, so why don’t we just come out and say it: Gerber Onesies are sized incredibly wrong!! I don’t remember this being such a problem five years ago when my son was an infant, but I don’t remember those Onesies saying “Made in India” either.

Gerber Onesies

I have been trying to find the right size for my baby girl (who is 2 mos. old now). The 3-6 mos. size did not fit at all. Got some 6-9 mos. that BARELY fit; they probably won’t work for more than 2 weeks. So I finally bought some 12 mos. which I’m assuming should be sufficient. Even though the package says they are for a 20-24 lb. baby! She weighs 12 lbs! Here’s Gerber’s size chart, as copied from the back of the package of short sleeve Onesies I purchased today:

Gerber Onesies Size Chart

Now, I am not an unreasonable person. I understand that these sizes are “approximations” based on blah-blah-blah… but they are not even close to the size that they say they should be based on how they are labeled! It’s not even a matter of “oh, well, this baby is bigger than that baby because of x,y,z, etc.” — there are weights and lengths/heights given that are supposed to correspond to a labeled size, but they are totally wrong! e.g. Size 3-6 mos. absolutely does not fit a 12.5 pound baby! Here is how I propose the chart should look like based on my experiences with Gerber Onesies and my daughter:

Gerber Onesies Actual-Fit Sizes

I have adjusted Gerber’s size chart by three sizes to account for the mislabeling, and to also allow for cotton shrinkage and baby growing. You will notice on my revised chart that Newborn and 0-3 mos. sizes have disappeared; there is no use in buying these smallest sizes unless you have a preemie coming home extremely small. There are also no Onesies that would fit above approx. 28 lbs/32 in. (12,7 kg/81,3 cm) so you may not even want to try.

In contrast, I have come to really appreciate Carter’s and its offshoot brands (Just One Year at Target and Child of Mine at Walmart). Their plain/colored “bodysuits” (the Onesie equivalent, without copyright infringement) are more expensive than Gerber’s; depending on where you purchase them, a 5-pack could cost $6-$14 more than Gerber Onesies. However, if you can manage to hit some sales and/or stack on some coupons, you can get more value out of the Carter’s for around the same price. In my humble opinion, Carter’s bodysuits seem to be of a higher quality both in material and construction, which gives them a better resale/hand-me-down value by far. The label-to-size chart that they use/provide is also much more acurate to how their clothes actually fit.

Carter's Bodysuits

I doubt that I will ever completely forsake Gerber Onesies in lieu of Carter’s bodysuits, as I have a lot of respect for the Gerber brand as a whole. But I find the sizing issues very frustrating, and the huge gaps in “age”-to-”size” estimates seem really unreasonable. More importantly, these recent problems have cost my family money in non-returnable merchandise on more than one occassion, which I must admit makes me hesitant to continue purchasing those items.
