Bookshelf Paperback Lifts

We recently installed new shelves, but with all the books taken out of storage, we were still having trouble with space. We had mass-market paperbacks stacked either two-deep or rows on top of each other. Either way, not the best. I had saved a pin showing lifts for a DVD shelf, but didn’t like way it was set up. The pin image shows a closed, fixed-width cube-shelf, but our shelves are open and I needed a more fluid, adjustable system that I could add or move chunks for future book accumulation. Then we made a random trip to the dollar store one day, and found the solution.

New Bookshelf (of shame)

My awesome little desktop bookshelf from Ecolok arrived yesterday! It’s EXACTLY what I was looking for! and well within my price-range! I’ve already spotted at least three other places around the house where we can nestle more of these — heaven knows we could use the extra book storage.

Feather Indentification

We seem to have the beginnings of a feather collection. Three of these were found in one day!

Of course, my impulse is to identify, catalogue, and display them (sound familiar?).

Moth Series: Moved to Flickr

Nerd alert! In case you didn’t already know: one of the more studious hobbies I enjoy is photographing and classifying (and hanging out at night getting swarmed by) moths. I decided to clear out my Flickr account and dedicate it wholly to this pursuit. It’s coming along nicely; I’ve got about half of my photos from 2005 thru now edited, identified and posted. There are some really awesome moths! Check them out!

Christmas Favorites: Movies, Music

On December 1st, I dig out our treasure box of festive media. Christmas-themed movies were one of my favorite parts of the holiday season as a child (and even still now that I’m the mom), and many of the ones we have are straight out of my childhood. I’ve added quite a few DVDs this year (marked with * in the lists below) — we might need a bigger box come January. Here’s what we’ve managed to watch thus far:

We grown-ups even managed to squeeze in the vaguely Christmas-themed Die Hard, and the loosely-associated The Shining (hey, it takes place during the winter…)

Childhood Keepsakes

So if you hadn’t already guessed by the lack of blog posts this summer, I have been staying very busy. My one monstrous undertaking is getting the house organized, with new shelving and storage, and rearranging all the closets. My hope is that having things well-organized will lead to easier maintenance of the house in general, plus I won’t have to “scoop & cram” everything into our bedroom when the holidays arrive and family comes over for festivities.

While sorting through some of our “keepsakes” storage, I came across many treasures from my childhood. It’s always the most fun going through these time-capsule-like totes, and discovering all these cherished items all over again. I decided to take some pics of my most favorite things among the nostalgic goodness…

Fabric Bookends

We recently added two DVD-rack shelving units to the living room, freeing up the bookcase that my dad made for me, to be actually used for books! I decided to make some fabric bookends, having stumbled upon them quite some time ago in JoshuaByOak‘s Etsy shop. I made them larger (7×5 inches), with heavy unbleached cotton duck-like fabric, applied the images using printable fabric transfers, and filled them with 6-lbs. of lentils. They turned out really well!

T-Shirt Wantingness

T-Shirts. I love them.

Some might say, that I fanatically collect them.

But that would be an overstatement, pfft (okay maybe just a little)

I’ve been wearing tees with printed graphics of all the things that are wonderful, since I was old enough to choose my own clothes. When I was 12, my favorite was an allover print Betty Boop shirt (it was fantastic).

Jeans and tees are what I wear. Year round. Mostly black, which in the summer is unfortunate. Mostly band shirts, with some movies sprinkled in there. More conversations have been initiated by strangers because of the t-shirt that I’m wearing than anything else.

Purchasing new shirts for myself happens less and less frequently, now in my era of parenthood. (not that there’s any lack of great kids shirts) But as soon as its mom’s turn, I’m gonna be all over these:

Sky Tide Photomerge

Photos taken by me the morning of June 20, 2006, around 9:30 a.m., just outside of Atkins, Iowa (west of Cedar Rapids); clouds supposedly classified as stratocumulus undulatus asperatus. Stitched together using Adobe Photoshop Photomerge, with heavy seam-flow finish work done by hand after automation.

Childhood, Childhood

I finally got around to finding a good use for my old She-Ra toy shields that I’ve been saving and carting around for the last 15-or-so years. For whatever reason I just could not give these up as I sorted through old childhood things. I never knew what to do with them, they’ve been in storage all this time, but I would never part with them, even as I rid myself of so many other adolescent possessions.

You can also see in the photos a portrait that my son (then 3.5 years-old) drew of his mom, me. (heart) I love it so much, it is easily one of my most cherished things in this world. I plan on framing it one of these days, but until then it will stay on the fridge where I can swoon over it every day.
