Beneath the Surface Flyer #1

My first ever gig flyer for my husband’s band, Beneath the Surface. I had so much fun making it! I hope I get many many more opportunities to create these in the future!

Beneath the Surface 3/6/10

Things have been going well for my husband’s metal band, Beneath the Surface. They had their second gig at 1st Ave Live on March 6th, and I was able to snap some better photos and one of the house techs even shot some video and posted it on YouTube!

LOL, Brett is such a goon (the guitarist). Oh, my hubby is the bass player, btw. They are building quite a local following and more gigs are being lined up. I’m going to be building an official website for them, and we need to get some shirts and stickers printed up. They’re pounding away working on new material, and hopefully they can have an 8-track-or-so album ready to record by the mid-to-late summer. They rock and it’s awesome! WOO!

Dethklok and Mastodon

We went to the Dethklok/Mastodon show at the Val Air Ballroom in Des Moines last night (that’s right, on a Wednesday night) and it was well worth the mid-week trip and the $43 per ticket.

Mastodon

Mastodon Dethklok Dethklok Dethklok Dethklok

I would have loved to get much closer, but being six months pregnant it was absolutely not advisable, lol. It was a smaller venue, though, so I was able to sneak up pretty close to the stage along the sides of the crowd without risking bodily harm. Oh, and they really need to work on the ventilation in that place, ugh, it was like a musky sauna. We arrived late (as usual) so we missed the first two opening bands, but from what I heard from other people we didn’t miss much.

Mastodon started their set about 30 minutes after we got there, so it was about perfect timing. I’m not a huge Mastodon fan; personally I think their music makes for excellent background music, played lowly on a stereo during a party. That’s pretty much how they were live, too. Kind of an oozy, eerie, smooth vibing music, that made my mind wander to what I could be doing while listening. It all seemed to blend together, but it wasn’t a bad time; there were definite rock-out highlights that kicked ass. Mastodon are kind of like if Tool and Slayer had a drowsy mutant baby… and I’ll just leave it at that.

Then Dethklok basically blew my brains out my face hole! They were so incredibly bad ass, I could barely believe what my eyes and ears were absorbing. I don’t really know what else to say about it, other than if you are a metal fan, you have got to see a Dethklok show. They were some of the most talented musicians I have ever seen on stage, and they were incredibly tight as a group. Everything was crisp and sharp and punchy and crunchy and all those other adverbs you would use to describe how immensely impressed you were with a band. It was so metal. I want to go again!

Nine Inch Nails Live!

Went to Nine Inch Nails concert last night. Pretty awesome. Trent was lookin’ HAWT! I’m a big fan of bulked-up/muscular Reznor, as opposed to the coked-out skinny/wiry Reznor of old. This show was not quite as awesome as the one we saw last year, but still a good show. But I TOOK MY CAMERA THIS TIME! So I have some cliché fan concert photos to share. My little brother (14 years old) came with us, and it was his first “general admission” concert! I took him into the fray of the floor and he got crushed and kicked and elbowed and loved it :) Ahh, bonding…

The opening band was Boris who I had never heard before and were less than enthralling, but I think I will download some of their tunes. They had some interesting songs and ambient noise, just not quite what I wanted to hear at a concert (may be good for some chill out music, though).

You can view the whole NIN setlist here, but my personal highlights were:

  • March of the Pigs
  • The Frail, prelude to…
  • CLOSER
  • Gave Up
  • Piggy
  • Pinion
  • Wish
  • Terrible Lie
  • The Big Come Down
  • The Hand That Feeds
  • Head Like a Hole

Plus, there was a totally awesome xylophone solo by Trent Reznor, which I loved (of course, lol).

We left during the first song of the encore set and I just found out that we missed HURT, so that is kind of a bummer… oh, well. One of the coolest things that happened was, we were off to the side of the stage on the floor watching and I was taking some pictures, and this moth came fluttering down out of nowhere and I thought, “Wow! How appropriate.” Don’t know why I was so psyched to see that moth… I just like moths, and they always make me think of NIN.

We ran into some people we knew, and I picked out some of the “concert regulars” that I always see around at the various rock/metal shows in the area. Not the regular crowd of friends that I’m used to going to concerts with, though. I wish my Peashy could have come! I missed having her there…

Here are the (acceptable) photos that I managed to snap:
