Gunner’s Birthday: It’sa Mario Time!

My little boy is 7-years-old!

To celebrate, we had planned a morning-to-night birthday Saturday — with family in the morning, friends in the afternoon, and a couple friends staying over night. BUT THEN: Ear infection sneak-attack the night before the party. Arg!

At the last second, had to push the friends/sleepover party back a week (with lots of phone calls at 10:30-at-night to attendees’ parents, *awkward*). Luckily we kept the “family” party as planned, so it wasn’t a total destructo-bummer for the birthday boy, who had been waiting in great anticipation of epic-birthday-party-day. Still had grammas, grampas, aunt & uncle, presents and decorations — and I forced the dozen family members there to eat the 4-dozen cupcakes I had prepared for the weekend. Who doesn’t love a birthday cupcake brunch?!

The decorations were left up for the week (quite festive). Fresh batches of cupcakes were baked the following Saturday (thank god my best friend was here and graciously offered her help to frost them, because I was about damn sick of frosting cupcakes), and promptly devoured by the ravenous hoard of first-graders.

Cupcakes with toppers

If you hadn’t guessed by now, the party “theme” was Super Mario Bros! *Sweeeeeet* I made 90% of the decorations myself, with the help of my trusty printer, resulting in a lot of scissor-blisters and deadened hand and finger nerves.

wall decorations

For the 4-foot character wall graphics, I culled some large images from the internet, sliced them up in PhotoShop and printed the pieces out — Toad was 5 sheets, Bowser a whopping 24 sheets, and the others fell anywhere in between. I cut out all the pieces from the sheets and glue-sticked them together (felt like I was in grade-school again!); hung them on the walls with good-ol’ double-sided tape. They were a big hit! (with the kids and the adults!)

Also mocked-up a papercraft question block template, printed and assembled and filled them with gold coins for the kids.

Papercraft Question Block Boxes

Gunner had fantastic fun with his friends, and the weather was gorgeous (78° in mid-March Iowa?!) which kept the kids entertained outdoors most of the time.

Gunner being goofy with his friends!

I was the most apprehensive about the sleepover, but it also went really well; barely any quarreling, no homesick kids, and all three boys were passed-out asleep before midnight without any problems. Overall, a pretty successful birthday. Not sure how we’re going to top it next year!

Nola is 2, and has a “new” room

Nola is now 2-years-old, and continues her refusal to both sit still and smile for pictures. 75% of her photos are either exuberant-grinning-blur or disinterested-curmudgeon-stare.

Nola

She really is a happy kid, I swear!! Just seems like whenever I get my camera out she puts on her poker-face, lol. We found her a Cabbage Patch kid at Goodwill that I could not believe — excellent condition… with clothes on, even! So of course I had to make her new baby doll a blanket.

Doll Quilt

I knew I was keeping all those strip-scraps for a reason, and not just because I’m some kind of fabric hoarder… because I’m not… I also made her some fresh new pillowcases for her big girl pillow that she has now!

Pillowcases

I put in some extra effort to put French seams on them, which easily doubled sewing time, but WOW was it worth it! So nice… I think I’ll put French seams on everything from now on… lol yeah right like that’s going to happen!

Nola also got a bedroom makeover “for her birthday” (not that she would really know any better, but that was my manic justification, anyway). Remember a-year-and-a-half ago when I was all like, “I’m gonna make Nola’s room all awesome!” with grandiose plans? Well none of that really happened until just recently…

BEFORE

AFTER

Yes, those are the same Alphabet Wall Cards as mentioned in the original post, finally up on the wall! They are so wonderful, great quality, and create a nice large-scale effect that fills a lot of space (’cause empty wall space is what we had!) — and for less than $20, you really can’t go wrong. The Discovery Kids Lunar Phase Moon Lamp is pretty effing sweet, as well. I also got one for Gunner’s room, and now I’m thinking I need to get another to put in our (the “grown-ups”/parents) bedroom.

BEFORE

AFTER

Lots of toy storage, with room for more (dear god please, not too much more). Plus a couple shelves dedicated solely to BOOKS — Nola’s absolute favorite things ever.

BEFORE

AFTER

(Note the dotted-line silhouette in there where bunting will eventually exist.) The picture hanging at the end of her crib was drawn by her big brother especially for her! There’s also a sneak peek at the crib bumpers I’ve been working on (sheesh, by the time I get them finished she won’t be sleeping in the crib anymore).

Zippered Reversible Individual Crib Rail Bumpers

I’ll be posting a blog entry with more pics of those when they’re all finished. The fabrics are “Fandango” by Kate Spain for Moda; and yes, they are now out-of-print — and now you know how long I’ve been picking away at this project. Diligence!

Christmas Tree Skirt!

IMG_5519

Thanks to thundymac for the inspiration — I was looking for a good Christmas project and this was perfect! Also thanks to Hancock Fabrics for having the best selection of Christmas fabrics in town! (and for having them on sale for 50% off) I checked at least three other places, and ended up getting all these prints from Hancock.

Also thanks to Leah Day for her binding tutorial. It was super-helpful and the binding was done right this time! I almost decided to make this into a circle skirt for Nola, but I think next year I’ll rework it into a skirt for her and make another tree skirt from some fantastic Michael Miller Christmas prints.

The Awesomeness of Today

Picked up our freshly laminated posters from Staples.
Soooo shiiiiiinnyyyyy…

IMG_5495

Why haven’t I laminated all posters ever?! This is just about the greatest decision a person could make. No more tack holes. No more poster damage. Posters forever!! Pure awesome.

Then the mail arrived, including a very special calendar swap package from Emily of cute little life. It is a gorgeous letterpress calendar made by Old School Stationers, and I could not be happier! Thank you so much, Emily!

IMG_5497

My order from Sally J Shim’s tag sale (which ended yesterday) also arrived. It’s fantastic, of course! I wouldn’t normally buy a blind-item fabric box, but I just could not resist this destash opportunity. I’ve got so much sewing to do!

Finished Crafts Backlog

There are a few things I’ve made this year that have been finished for a while but I never took the time to photograph. Well I finally got around to it! (plus more) I’ve also added these to the Adel Zeller Handmade Facebook page, and comments are welcome!

IMG_4807

This blanket was my husband’s birthday gift this year, finished up in late March/early April. It’s made from a lot of our old t-shirts that were “retired” (i.e. too worn-out to wear), and a few more that I snagged cheap on eBay that were awesome. It measures about 60″ wide by 87″ long, and it is SUPER WARM! The most baddest-ass blanket EVER.

IMG_4798 IMG_4787

Nola’s quilt was finished back in early May! As you can see, it is not being used as a wall-hanging as I had originally intended. She loves it so much! And it is a blanket after all, so I figure we’ll just have to find something else for the wall.

IMG_4805

I made these drawstring bags for Nola’s toys back when it was still cold out. It’s not often you get to embroider the word “Balls” onto something! I have to admit that I snickered to myself the whole time.

IMG_4800 IMG_4801

Gunner has been bugging me for weeks to make him a necklace. So I finally dug out the supplies, and braided hemp cord for a couple hours yesterday. He looks like a little surfer dude!

IMG_4626

Here’s an impulse shot from July 2nd of my “sewing area” in the kitchen. A lot has changed about it in the last month! The shelving unit has been moved to a different wall and the Nirvana poster is gone. I’m glad I took this picture because it shows the lemon & yellow prints Cornhole bag set that I made custom order for a wedding, that I forgot to take photos of before shipping out! Grr! Oh well, live and learn I suppose.

IMG_4810

And lastly, my new thread spool holders! Great way to fill in some wall space with organization, and it’s pretty, too. Full of win!

Fabric Bookends

We recently added two DVD-rack shelving units to the living room, freeing up the bookcase that my dad made for me, to be actually used for books! I decided to make some fabric bookends, having stumbled upon them quite some time ago in JoshuaByOak‘s Etsy shop. I made them larger (7×5 inches), with heavy unbleached cotton duck-like fabric, applied the images using printable fabric transfers, and filled them with 6-lbs. of lentils. They turned out really well!

IMG_4572

I made four of them, but then realized that we really didn’t need that many bookends, as we had plenty of books to fill up the shelves! So now they’re more for decoration, which is fine by me.

My favorite is the one featuring anatomical skeleton illustrations — three images (torso, deer, praying) from William Cheselden’s Osteographia, and the other (sitting) from Elementi di anatomia fisiologica applicata alle belle arti figurative (“Elements of physiological anatomy applied to the fine arts”).

Etsy Finds: Clockmaker with strings

I haven’t posted an Etsy Finds in quite some time, and after looking through all the lovely treasuries by the people who have been including my items, I was very inspired to make another! I went and skulked around Etsy and managed to dredge up a fantastic assemblage that I am incredibly happy to present. I’ve never done well with titles, so I used the Wikipedia Special:Random feature and the Quotations Page Randomizer to get a random-yet-seemingly-deep-and-poetic title: Clockmaker with strings. Please visit the treasury’s page and give it some love and clicks!

Clockmaker with strings

And of course I found some wonderful items and shops to add to my favorites! So all-in-all a successful and enjoyable exercise (although I stayed up far too late) and I plan to put together another soon.

Nola’s Room Makeover, Intro

Now that Nola is no longer a flailing newborn, she needs a proper baby girl’s room to grow into. I have plenty of plans swirling around in my head already, and most of them are simple and I already have most of the stuff I need. It’s just a matter of finding the time and getting it done!

Note the gaping white areas of blank wall space. Boring! My plans include alphabet wall cards, proper curtains, a small set of shelves (like in Gunner’s room), get that motorcycle out of there, switch out the breathable bumpers and mobile for the “new” ones acquired this weekend, and much more! I do like the extra storage under the crib, but I need to get a proper storage tub for the space there. I’ll be posting some “halfway there” pics once I get a few things done. ;)

FYI, here’s what Gunner thinks of the whole thing:

Mmm... root beer...
