KCWC Spring 2012 Results

So, yeah, I’m a bit late in posting this. HA-HA! Go figure!

I applied myself to the Elsie Marley Kids Clothing Week Challenge Spring 2012 with blazing ferocity, and the result is a cute little Southerny apron-style sundress! Even I was not expecting it to turn out so “country”, but that’s where the fabric led me. Seems appropriate, since we live in the country, after all.

This is the first actual article of clothing that I’ve ever made! I started with vintage handmade curtains, acquired from a friend whose grandmother had moved into a retirement home, and who graciously allowed me to ransack her attic and basement for fabrics and other lovelies. I was thinking about actually using the curtains; they were so pretty, but totally not my style. She already had the lace trimmed and the tie-backs ruffled, so I decided to hack them up and sew them back together in a new configuration, like the Frankenstein that I am.

I used one tie-back and half of one curtain panel, and lined it with muslin for modesty’s sake. I didn’t use a pattern, as they terrify me and my mother has yet to instruct me on the ins-and-outs of such exotic things. I took some measurements, made some plans and adjustments and poorly-drawn diagrams, and used a cereal bowl to cut out the curvatures of the armpits — because that’s how we do things around here.

I love it, it’s adorable and precious — but Nola is less than thrilled. The whole week while I was working on it, she would ask, “Mommy workin’ on my dress?” Yet every time I try to put it on her, she says “No! No! I don’t want to wear it!” Freakin’ 2-year-olds, I swear. We’ll see how much actual wear it will get before she grows out of it. Glad I didn’t spend the extra time installing those pockets I was contemplating.

Maybe I’ll bust out another panel and make her something a little less “contemporary” and a little more “active”, so she can do all those things that her impulsive two-year-old brain compels her to do — i.e. chasing the dogs, rolling in the grass, jumping in mud puddles, throwing rocks at *whatever*, kicking her brother, etc.

Oh, but definitely with pockets this time.

Nola is 2, and has a “new” room

Nola is now 2-years-old, and continues her refusal to both sit still and smile for pictures. 75% of her photos are either exuberant-grinning-blur or disinterested-curmudgeon-stare.

Nola

She really is a happy kid, I swear!! Just seems like whenever I get my camera out she puts on her poker-face, lol. We found her a Cabbage Patch kid at Goodwill that I could not believe — excellent condition… with clothes on, even! So of course I had to make her new baby doll a blanket.

Doll Quilt

I knew I was keeping all those strip-scraps for a reason, and not just because I’m some kind of fabric hoarder… because I’m not… I also made her some fresh new pillowcases for her big girl pillow that she has now!

Pillowcases

I put in some extra effort to put French seams on them, which easily doubled sewing time, but WOW was it worth it! So nice… I think I’ll put French seams on everything from now on… lol yeah right like that’s going to happen!

Nola also got a bedroom makeover “for her birthday” (not that she would really know any better, but that was my manic justification, anyway). Remember a-year-and-a-half ago when I was all like, “I’m gonna make Nola’s room all awesome!” with grandiose plans? Well none of that really happened until just recently…

BEFORE

AFTER

Yes, those are the same Alphabet Wall Cards as mentioned in the original post, finally up on the wall! They are so wonderful, great quality, and create a nice large-scale effect that fills a lot of space (’cause empty wall space is what we had!) — and for less than $20, you really can’t go wrong. The Discovery Kids Lunar Phase Moon Lamp is pretty effing sweet, as well. I also got one for Gunner’s room, and now I’m thinking I need to get another to put in our (the “grown-ups”/parents) bedroom.

BEFORE

AFTER

Lots of toy storage, with room for more (dear god please, not too much more). Plus a couple shelves dedicated solely to BOOKS — Nola’s absolute favorite things ever.

BEFORE

AFTER

(Note the dotted-line silhouette in there where bunting will eventually exist.) The picture hanging at the end of her crib was drawn by her big brother especially for her! There’s also a sneak peek at the crib bumpers I’ve been working on (sheesh, by the time I get them finished she won’t be sleeping in the crib anymore).

Zippered Reversible Individual Crib Rail Bumpers

I’ll be posting a blog entry with more pics of those when they’re all finished. The fabrics are “Fandango” by Kate Spain for Moda; and yes, they are now out-of-print — and now you know how long I’ve been picking away at this project. Diligence!

Happy Halloween 2011

Pumpkins carved

Jack-O-Lanterns in the dark

I made the costumes for both kids this year and actually finished them. Several stuffed animals (and one leather handbag) were sacrificed to make Nola’s barbarian costume. Her boots were the cutest part, but you can’t really see them in any of the pictures. Nola the Destroyer!

Nola the Destroyer

Gunner was a viking warrior — quite fitting with his Norwegian heritage. He also had awesome boots, and a sweet “fur” cloak with a wicked medallion clasp, of which I’m totally jealous!

Both kids won 1st places in their age groups at our local Halloween party costume contest! (I really had to futz with this next picture; Nola’s face was totally washed-out for some reason)

I have to thank my mom for working so hard making all my awesome Halloween costumes when I was growing up, and thusly inspiring me to work hard to make my kids’ costumes. The torch has been passed!

Process: Nola’s Wall-Hanging Quilt

I’ve had the fabric for this quilt for Nola for… almost a year now? Yikes. I’ve finally re-cut the pieces I had previously cut, and yesterday I planned it all out and pieced it together.

IMG_4488

I stitched it all together last night and now its hanging there, waiting to be finished with batting and backing and top-stitching and binding. Dang, when I write it all out it seems like a lot to do still…

IMG_4494

I’m so excited! Why did I put this off so long?! Oh yeah, because I do that with EVERYTHING EVER.

Other fun news: I added an updated family photo to the About Me page. Finally got someone (my mom) take a picture of all of us together! We just happen to be looking extra-dapper in our “nice” clothes, because my friend was getting married!

Guess who will be 1-year-old next week?

Nola

That’s right: Miss Nola will be 1-year-old next week. How the heck did this happen so fast?!

And just how excited is she about her impending birthday?

Nola

But hey! Mommy is going to make mini vanilla cupcakes with pink frosting!

Nola

Now that’s more like it!

We’ve set a date and invited grandparents and aunts and uncles and some family friends. Many of them have asked if there’s anything in particular to get for her birthday, but I can’t really think of anything! It’s a big difference from when Gunner turned one, and I had a huge list of things I wanted to get for him, which resulted in this:

Gunner's 1st birthday

Way too much stuff! Including a three-foot stuffed Elmo that was bigger than him!

Gunner's 1st birthday

I’ve learned my lesson! That was too-too much! On top of everything from his first Christmas, there was hardly room to put anything away! Not this time. We had a nice, simple Christmas 2010, and I’m looking forward to a nice, simple Nola’s birthday.

I’m planning on getting her a Gloworm (because she loves things that light up), and giving her a couple handmade wooden cars that were mine when I was little, and maybe an Elmo plush (a small one!) if I can find a normal non-singing-dancing-giggling-annoying stuffed Elmo somewhere. Then we’ll see what else she gets, hopefully some super-cute clothes!

Alien Robots and a Peanut Jug

Well I spent all day yesterday (about 9am-9pm) vaccuming and moving furniture and shampooing the carpets. It was festive. BUT I did get to take a break, shower, and go to my son’s “holiday” program at the elementary school. I love these things! Most people seem peeved to have to go to these (like Bo), but I think they are super cute and fun. This year the theme was some kind of alien invasion deal; look at the awesome hats!!

Alien Robots

There was a song during which all the kids got to improv-dance the Robot, and the Robot is Gunner’s favorite dance so he was having so much fun! Look how happy he is! Can you guess which one he is? LOL — I know, the photo looks kind of creepy with all the faces blurred out, but I realize that some people probably don’t want other people slapping up pics of their kids on the internet, and that’s fine with me. Its actually easier this way, you can spot Gunner instantly.

Empty Peanut Jug

This morning was very quiet and restful. Bo and Gunner slept in, so it was just Nola and me. She played for a good while with her new favorite distraction: the “fill and spill” jar — which is actually just a Fisher peanuts jug, washed up with the label removed. She loves it! You put a bunch of links and small toys in it, and she gets to pull them out and dump it, shake it and roll it. Oh, and she loves yelling into it to hear her voice all booming. I wish I could find such fun with something so simplistic!
