Weekend Project: Dog Mattresses

I resolved this weekend to complete a simple project: cushions for our three dogs’ kennels. You see, our dogs used to have a couch — a couch we got for free from my husband’s grandmother — but they systematically destroyed it to the point where it was just black lining over box springs with clumps of shredded upholstery and foam clinging to jagged staples and nails sticking out everywhere. Not exactly the best place for dogs to sleep. We considered trying to find another “free” couch, but my paranoia of bringing bed bugs or cockroaches into the house from some “stranger’s” couch, and the fact that we knew damn well the dogs would do the exact same thing over again to a “new” couch, we decided against it. Instead we moved the old couch out (to be sacrificially burned at some later point this summer), and moved the rarely-used-until-now kennels over to where the couch used to be.

My job was to make cushions so the dogs will be comfy with this new arrangement. I can’t remember the last time I completed a project within 48-hours of initial planning… but it actually happened!

KCWC Spring 2012 Results

So, yeah, I’m a bit late in posting this. HA-HA! Go figure!

I applied myself to the Elsie Marley Kids Clothing Week Challenge Spring 2012 with blazing ferocity, and the result is a cute little Southerny apron-style sundress! Even I was not expecting it to turn out so “country”, but that’s where the fabric led me. Seems appropriate, since we live in the country, after all.

Adventure Time!

I made a 4-foot Finn doll for Gunner! This was my first attempt at a real “plush” sewing project, and it turned out pretty darn good (and big)! I call him Proto-Finn; I’ve made some planned adjustments to the pattern so I can make another and fix some of the wonkiness. He’ll still have the same noodle’y limbs, though — that’s the best part!!

Gunner & Finn

He’s got magnets in his mouth and buttons for eyes, so we can make some other facial expressions for him, too! He still needs a backpack, and Jake the Dog will be made sometime in the future. Mathematical!

Halloween Costumes 2011

I made the costumes for both kids this year and actually finished them. Several stuffed animals (and one leather handbag) were sacrificed to make Nola’s barbarian costume. Her boots were the cutest part, but you can’t really see them in any of the pictures. Nola the Destroyer!

Fabric Bookends

We recently added two DVD-rack shelving units to the living room, freeing up the bookcase that my dad made for me, to be actually used for books! I decided to make some fabric bookends, having stumbled upon them quite some time ago in JoshuaByOak‘s Etsy shop. I made them larger (7×5 inches), with heavy unbleached cotton duck-like fabric, applied the images using printable fabric transfers, and filled them with 6-lbs. of lentils. They turned out really well!

Process: Nola’s Wall-Hanging Quilt

I’ve had the fabric for this quilt for Nola for… almost a year now? Yikes. I’ve finally re-cut the pieces I had previously cut, and yesterday I planned it all out and pieced it together.

Pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer

Pile o' pillowcases

I decided to participate in CraftHope Project 9 and make some pillowcases for the ConKerr Cancer foundation, and they’re finally finished! Not quite in time for the CraftHope deadline, but that’s okay since ConKerr collects pillowcases year-round. It was so much fun making these!

Pink Skulls! Carseat Cover

Finally got around to sewing up the carseat cover from the Make It Do blog tutorial. It turned out great and I couldn’t be happier! Now I just need to make a matching nursing cover and finish up the Amy Butler diaper bag (hopefully before she’s out of diapers! lol).

Happy Mother’s Day!

I hope that all the wonderful moms out there are having a great Mother’s Day! This is my first Mother’s Day as a mother-of-two, and I am feeling great! I thought having one kid was awesome, and then when #2 was on the way, I was very apprehensive about how I would possibly manage to split my love between two tiny people, and what if I couldn’t? what if there was something wrong with me?! Well, as it turns out, it’s not difficult at all! Instead of a finite amount of love to be divided in twain, the love just doubles and there’s plenty to go around! Lol, that’s a bit silly, but I’m feeling silly today (and it’s true). Someday, my children will realize that their mom is a dork, and then they will have to come to terms with their own dorkiness that I have instilled into them. Check out what this dork made for her own Mom!
