The Awesomeness of Today

Picked up our freshly laminated posters from Staples.
Soooo shiiiiiinnyyyyy…

Why haven’t I laminated all posters ever?! This is just about the greatest decision a person could make. No more tack holes. No more poster damage. Posters forever!! Pure awesome.

Then the mail arrived, including a very special calendar swap package from Emily of cute little life. It is a gorgeous letterpress calendar made by Old School Stationers, and I could not be happier! Thank you so much, Emily!

My order from Sally J Shim’s tag sale (which ended yesterday) also arrived. It’s fantastic, of course! I wouldn’t normally buy a blind-item fabric box, but I just could not resist this destash opportunity. I’ve got so much sewing to do!

Zombie Apocalypse: Things I would miss

There are many “luxuries” in life that are taken for granted on a daily basis, but in the event of a zombie apocalypse (I’m just sayin’…) there are certain things that I would especially miss. You know, other than relative peace and calm and safety and not having to splatter brains all day long.

  1. Music. Without electricity, I can’t listen to music. This is why I married a musician–as long as he’s alive and with me and has a guitar, we’re golden.
  2. Sleep. Oh, my precious, precious sleep. Hours and hours of sleep. How can a person be expected to sleep during a zombie apocalypse? Nothing but nightmares.
  3. Medicine. Way-back-when, if a person had a fever, they would die. Nowadays we have Tylenol. How much would it suck to die of a fever when there’s a perfectly good zombie apocalypse going on?
  4. Shoes. Shoes wear out, become soiled, tear and split, and during a zombie apocalypse it’s not often that you’re strolling through the mall.
  5. Bananas and citrus fruits. I live in Iowa–do we even grow fruit here? Maybe some strawberries, an apple tree or something, and a shit-ton of berries (but I don’t think they count).
  6. Toilet paper. Enough said.

This is all assuming that I do indeed survive long enough to get past the “OH SHIT” part of the zombie apocalypse and have time to gather my thoughts, mourn the loss of my family and friends, come to terms with the reality of the situation, figure out a plan to avoid dying, and THEN reminisce about the amenities of the “good times”.

I have a 67% chance of surviving a zombie apocalypse

The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks

My husband brought back a special surprise for me from his trip to C2E2 2010 (comic book convention) in April. It turns out that Max Brooks was at the con for an appearance and book signing, so Bo figured I would like to have a signed copy of Brooks’ Zombie Survival Guide, even though we already owned it. When he got up to the table, however, he found something new and unexpected and awesome!

The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks (Max Brooks, Ibraim Roberson)

Recorded Attacks is a graphic novel offshoot from The Zombie Survival Guide, and it’s REALLY REALLY COOL! The stories pull you in; whether they are based even somewhat in reality or completely conjured up in Brooks’ overactive imagination, they seem easily believable… like rumors from the next town over that can never be verified.

The illustration artist is Ibraim Roberson, who’s style is absolutely fantastic! There is a very fine line to walk when illustrating zombie fiction, between too humorously cartoon-like and over-the-top gore-for-the-sake-of-gore (and shock value). Roberson’s style is perfectly balanced in this book; lifelike enough to be believable, while the grotesque horrors are precision-tuned to turn your stomach without completely overpowering the underlying ideas. Top notch stuff!

I would recommend this book for even the pickiest of zombie genre snobs! It’s also great for the weekend zombie enthusiast, your teenage sibling, conspiracy theorists, your undead grandma, or anyone who appreciates the relevance of zombies in the arts. Final grade: A (for Awesome)

Huh?! Survival of the Dead?!

Why did no one tell me that George A. Romero was making another movie?! By the looks of the trailer, it will be filled with fantastical zombie killing scenes, as I have come to expect from Romero’s zombie flicks. Have I not mentioned how awesome the zombie death scenes were in Diary of the Dead?! Made the whole movie, if you ask me. You can watch the official trailer for Survival of the Dead and see for yourself just a taste of what I’m talking about:

Some people say that the “of the Dead” series has become drawn out and cliche, but I say: “NEVERRRRR!” (and shake my fist in the air). Romero’s continuing saga never fails to entertain me. I mean, COME ON! The guy’s been doing this for OVER 40 YEARS! It’s no wonder he has devised some of the most original and creatively theatrical ways to kill zombies that I’ve ever come across in the various forms of zombie media.

This, along with the fact that I personally enjoy Romero’s directorial style, has me all excited for Survival of the Dead, and I will most certainly be purchasing the DVD (to add to the collection). I would also go to see it in the theaters, but I expect it will be limited release, which means it probably won’t be in any theaters around here… we’ll see what happens this Friday (May 28). Otherwise I may have to wait until August 24 for the DVD release!

If you’re interested, you could actually watch Survival of the Dead right now on Amazon’s V.O.D. service… but it’ll cost ya… $9.99 to be exact. I’m not sure if it will still be available once the film is released, or up until the DVD release, so get while the getting’s good!

Wizard World, Flashback Weekend

Bo and I went to Chicago in July with some friends for the annual Wizard World convention, but then when we got there and checked in to our hotel, we discovered that the Flashback Weekend HORROR convention was happening in our hotel on the same weekend!! It was SO AWESOME!

Wizard World was pretty neat. I’m not too big on gaming and comics and all that, but they had awesome shirts and TOYS, posters and movies, and I got to fill in some of the empty spaces in my Spawn collection, and I got some awesome swag for my little bro for his b’day. Everything was so bright and sparkly! I basically wandered around… here are some pics!

This is what you see when you enter Wizard World The Suicide Girls!! WOO! OMG! It's Lou Ferrigno! C3PO and others... Captain Jack Sparrow! EXCELLENT impersonator, even SOUNDED like him. Holy crap, it's Mojo! 8-ft. tall sculpture of The Hulk Air-blown 'Yivo' from Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs Bo and Weed being uberdorks.

The horror convention, on the other hand, I was SUPER-PSYCHED about! There were all kinds of people made-up like zombies wandering around our hotel, they had a Zombie Pin-Up contest, and Elvira was there looking FANTASTIC! I got a Night of the Living Dead mug. And best of all, GEORGE A. ROMERO WAS THERE!!! I got to meet him! I stood in line for an hour (because every 15-20 minutes he would go out for a smoke, lol) and I got a “George A. Romero for President” shirt, and I got my picture taken with him, and I got an autograph!! OMG IT WAS SO MEGA-SPECTACULAR! I did sacrifice getting my Spawn #1 autographed by Todd MacFarlane in order to meet George A. Romero, but it was so totally worth it. I was so excited; in the picture that was taken with him, I look like I’m going to freakout (I almost peed a little). What a great vacation!

One of the best Zombie Pin-Up entries that I saw there. ME with GEORGE A. ROMERO!!
